On May 31st 1912, Chien-Shiung Wu was born in a hospital located in Taichung, Jiangsu. During her early years of childhood, she and her father were close, and she was often encouraged to take classes taught by the Chinese philosopher, Hu Shih. At 11 years old, Wu left Taichung to attend a Women's normal school which was in Suzhou. In 1930-1934, Wu studied Physics at National Central University, and had gotten a BS in physics. Then in 1936, Wu became an assistant at Zhejiang University, while also doing graduate level study in physics. 2 years later, she completed her study and in 1936 she moved to the USA.
Wu then wanted to continue her studies in Physics at a higher level, so she sent out applications overseas to study physics to multiple Universities, and Michigan State University was the first to respond back, inviting her to come. In 1936, Wu and her friend Dong Ruofen, arrived in San Francisco, the location of Michigan State University. She met Luke Chia-Lui Yuan 2 years later, a young man who was a physicist, and also the grandson of Yuan Shikai. Chien-Shiung Wu achieved her goals a few years after, and also got married to Yuan, in 1942. In 1947, she gave birth to her son, Vincent Yuan. Then On Febaurauy 16 1997, Chien-Shiung Wu died at the age of 84, in New York City, suffering a stroke. |
